"Crowns fade; sigils endure."
The House Amethyst Chronicle
The Story

Not a seat. A cabinet. Inside: every treaty, every marriage, every succession, every debt the realm has ever signed. Amethyst opens it at the hour of its choosing.

Three years ago, in the ruins of the black keep, the Amethyst chancellor read a nine-hundred-year-old brief aloud. Three of the four Houses left the chamber before he finished.

Amethyst does not raise levies. Amethyst raises problems — for other Houses. A missing shipment. A miscounted ledger. A steward found dead in a locked room.

They were not always meant to rule. But no one else, in nine hundred years, prepared to. Amethyst prepared. Amethyst prepared for exactly this.
In a library that no other House has ever been permitted to enter, House Amethyst keeps a document. It bears the seal of the first Iron King and the countersign of his brother, who married an Amethyst. It says, in careful hand, that if the direct line ever fails, the succession passes to that brother's descendants. It has been kept for nine centuries. It has been read aloud only twice: once at its writing, and once, three years ago, on the day the throne fell empty.
Legitimacy. Amethyst does not fight to win — they fight to prove they were right. To be crowned is not enough. To be acknowledged as having been the rightful heirs all along is the whole point. Anything less is another loan on the borrowed crown.
The smallest of the four Houses, and the oldest. Founded by scholars, not soldiers. For most of history they were kingmakers, not kings — married into every dynasty, present at every coronation, powerful in a way no map could show.
Amethyst holds the ruined libraries of the north, the Vellum Throne, and the pens of every court scribe in the realm. Their armies are small and strange. Their assassins are not.
